Telecommunications

Not only does Africa have the fastest growing telecommunications market in the world, but it also boasts the highest profit margins. Mobile phone penetration rates have increased from below 5% in 1995 to around 20% in 2006, according to Credit Suisse. In addition, the informal sector for pre-paid cards is growing at an unprecedented rate and it is proving difficult to assess the true potential of this market.

Significant attractive deal flow in the telecommunications sector is expected to continue over the next few years through additional growth in mobile phone penetration. Additional opportunities lie in the consolidation of existing companies, further privatisation of incumbent public operators, the spread of new technologies such as wireless broadband, and increased investment in shared infrastructure such as fibre optic cables and cellular towers.
